Edith Chu

Edith Chu was born in Paris, France, to Chinese parents who were originally from Hong Kong and immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta as a child. Art became her favorite subject in school because it broke through the language barrier. She enjoyed creating and expressing herself through art, and used it as a tool for communication. Edith graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. From there she worked for F&D Scene Changes in Calgary, Alberta, painting sets and scenery for theatre and commercial use. She worked alongside many great artists at F&D. One of her mentors, Johnny Chong, encouraged her to pursue drawing in order to improve her art. This led her to take classes in classical realism in New York and Florence. Ms.Chu is currently a teacher with Edmonton Public School Board and resides in Edmonton.

Artist Statement

As a first generation Chinese-Canadian, I am given the privilege of understanding and representing Asian culture. This is a culture so old that it's ingrained in our daily habits without thought. The Canadian part of me is always wanting to dig deeper for explanations. These artworks you see here are ordinary scenes from everyday life which serve as access points for understanding a culture, such as women preparing food, a village house, and a Chinese cooking show. My artwork often combines storytelling with nostalgia.

Carrie's Craft's and Toys

I am an artist who does ceramics. My ceramics are 3D sculptures, with the odd plates and bowls. They are beautiful sculptures often featuring human or animal figures, and I use a lot of flowers in my work. I also use a lot of colour. I like to use ceramics because it is soft on my hands, and it makes me feel good. I feel like I can get the piece to look realistic and how I want it to look out in the world. I like making things that will last a thousand years, and will never break. Many of my sculptures of people are nude, and I like sculpting them that way, although I don’t know why. I enjoy looking at flowers, so I like to put flowers in my work. I’m always happy making sculptures, and I like to make people happy too.

Hive Herbals

Growing up in the Alberta prairies and BC wilderness I have spent most of my life foraging and playing around with herbs. In the last few years I have used herbs and the earth to heal some deep wounds in my life, which has inspired me to deepen my knowledge and share it with others.

North of Noah

Started by a first-time mom, North of Noah was born out of the many ideas sprouted during the sleepy early mornings of maternity leave. While our baby was lucky to receive many hand-me-downs, I'd find myself panic-buying jackets for my little one because suddenly his 0-3m coat was too small!Welcome to North of Noah, vintage charm meets modern minimalism. Our collections are thoughtfully crafted to evoke nostalgia and simplicity.Rooted in sustainability and minimalism, we encourage mindful consumption—each piece is made to be cherished, reused, and passed down. We’re also passionate about building a community of moms who embrace guilt-free motherhood, child-led learning, and the joy of reusing and repurposing.
