Edith Chu

Edith Chu was born in Paris, France, to Chinese parents who were originally from Hong Kong and immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta as a child. Art became her favorite subject in school because it broke through the language barrier. She enjoyed creating and expressing herself through art, and used it as a tool for communication. Edith graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. From there she worked for F&D Scene Changes in Calgary, Alberta, painting sets and scenery for theatre and commercial use. She worked alongside many great artists at F&D. One of her mentors, Johnny Chong, encouraged her to pursue drawing in order to improve her art. This led her to take classes in classical realism in New York and Florence. Ms.Chu is currently a teacher with Edmonton Public School Board and resides in Edmonton.

Artist Statement

As a first generation Chinese-Canadian, I am given the privilege of understanding and representing Asian culture. This is a culture so old that it's ingrained in our daily habits without thought. The Canadian part of me is always wanting to dig deeper for explanations. These artworks you see here are ordinary scenes from everyday life which serve as access points for understanding a culture, such as women preparing food, a village house, and a Chinese cooking show. My artwork often combines storytelling with nostalgia.
